Wham! The carpet monster reaches up and throws his victim on the ground.
The slamming of the door. The solid crack of a baseball hit just right. A well-timed bit of sarcasm. The endangered species runs out of natural habitat.
Wham! Fast-moving cars collide without regard. The prison gate closes for the first time. Or the last. The hefty drops of hail pounce on the pavement. The closing bell leaves the investor in flux.
Sometimes I am the source of wham in the world. Or wham comes at me from another body. Or nature. Or mystery.
A superhero’s wham feels different from the wham that comes from a villain. Wham may be delayed and take her time. Wham is chaotic and methodical; assured and uncertain – all at once.
Wham! The elephant bruises the soil with massive movement. The hammerhead shark slams down on the stingray. The Venus flytrap snaps the life of the arachnid, all without notice.
Wham! A heart is moved into high rhythm. Life suddenly changed. A moment frozen in time. Yet the seconds continue to tick on by.
Wham! A child is born. A lover takes her last breath. Wham is “I do.” And “it’s over.” Wham is both palliative and curative. Wham wonders if you are sitting down. Wham breeds a joyful shout.
The power of wham is often underestimated. And overestimated. Wham does not have a monopoly on emotion. But manages to touch the whole rainbow of feeling.
Wham! Life begins. And is transformed. Wham! Again. And again. Amen.
